The streets of the French capital, Paris, witnessed outbreaks of violence and severe clashes following Paris Saint-Germain's triumph in the UEFA Champions League title against English club Arsenal. As tensions escalated, groups of fans engaged in direct confrontations with law enforcement, leading to acts of vandalism and fires being set in several scattered areas. In response, French authorities intervened decisively to control the tense situation that followed the victory celebrations in the heart of the city.
Regarding the specific incidents, security services reported the destruction of a bus shelter in the 8th arrondissement, the burning of bicycles near Porte de Saint-Cloud, and a vehicle being set alight in Trocadéro Square. French police were forced to use tear gas to disperse crowds on the Champs-Élysées and near the Étienne Marcel metro station. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain issued an official statement urging everyone to experience the historic moment responsibly and respectfully, emphasizing that the celebration should be "a reflection of this exceptional season in terms of unity and exemplary conduct".
Pertaining to accompanying security measures, interventions resulted in multiple arrests, with 10 individuals taken into custody before the match concluded. This was alongside the seizure of flares and prohibited equipment during 1,500 inspections. For his part, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi praised the celebratory atmosphere but called for calm from the fans. Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated: "The atmosphere is wonderful, and the fans deserve it because they are the best. I ask the supporters to remain calm and not cause problems, as we will arrive tomorrow to celebrate with you at Champ de Mars at 2 PM." He also stressed the importance of ensuring everyone's safety.
These events occurred at a time when Paris was under significant security alert, with 22,000 police and gendarmerie officers mobilized, 8,000 of whom were deployed within the capital and its suburbs. The football celebrations coincided with other major events in the city, such as the Roland Garros tennis tournament, which intensified pressure on security agencies to secure the streets after the match. Paris Saint-Germain ultimately secured the victory with a 4-3 penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw between the two teams.
