Bennacer: "I'm Disappointed Not to Be Called Up for Algeria Squad; This World Cup Was a Major Goal for Me"
Ismaël Bennacer expressed his disappointment after being excluded from Algeria's preliminary squad for the recent training camp, ahead of the 2026 World Cup finals.
In an interview with "La Gazette du Fennec," Bennacer stated: "I was recovering well, starting to play more minutes, regaining my best form, and feeling continuous improvement on the pitch. Therefore, I am disappointed not to be called up, because I felt ready for the World Cup."
He continued: "After missing out on the dream of participating in the 2022 World Cup, the 2026 World Cup undoubtedly held special significance. It was a major goal for me; I wanted to be there to help the team, defend our flag, and add my experience to the squad."
Bennacer concluded: "I won't lie, I am perplexed. When you feel physically good, give your best, and regain your usual level, and then the World Cup dream you've planned for years with your country vanishes, it certainly becomes difficult to accept."
It is worth noting that coach Vladimir Petković has not yet announced Algeria's final squad, which is expected to be revealed on May 31st. However, he has already commenced a training camp with the players selected in the preliminary list.
