All-English Europa League Semi-Final Confirmed, Nottingham Forest Ends Long Absence
The lineup for the UEFA Europa League semi-finals has been confirmed following the conclusion of the quarter-final matches. English sides Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are set to clash in an all-British encounter, while Portugal's Sporting Braga will face Germany's Freiburg. This setup guarantees an English team in the final, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 20, especially after the elimination of Spanish teams Real Betis and Celta Vigo in the last eight.
Nottingham Forest successfully reached the continental semi-finals for the first time in 42 years, overcoming Portuguese giants Porto with a 2-1 aggregate victory. This achievement marks the team's return to the European stage, from which they had been absent from the advanced stages for a long time. On the other side, Aston Villa, under the guidance of Spanish coach Unai Emery, secured their spot in the semi-finals with a dominant 7-1 aggregate win over Italian side Bologna, affirming their ambition to compete for the continental title, which grants direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League next season.
These upcoming fixtures hold double significance for Nottingham Forest, who are currently navigating a challenging situation in the Premier League. In this context, head coach Vítor Pereira expressed his desire to win the title as a manager, having previously lifted it as an assistant coach with Porto in 2011. Pereira stated, “Of course I want to win the Europa League. I previously won the title as an assistant coach, but I want to win it as a head coach. I am also striving to keep my team in the Premier League and fight to reach the final.”
The club's management faces difficult challenges in balancing their European aspirations with securing their top-flight status. Pereira affirmed that the utmost priority remains preserving the club's position in the Premier League, stating that “team relegation would be a disaster for everyone, both for the fans and the club.” He further clarified that management has explicitly informed him that survival is the team's primary objective during this difficult period, which has seen the club spend approximately £180 million in the transfer market.
