Koeman Criticizes Camavinga After Bayern Red Card: "I Don't Accept What He Did, No Need to Hold the Ball"
Ronald Koeman, coach of the Netherlands national team, defended the decision to send off Eduardo Camavinga during Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final second leg clash against Bayern Munich, asserting that the responsibility does not lie solely with the referee.
Speaking in comments reported by Spanish newspaper "Marca," Koeman said, "We witnessed great matches at a very high level, and I don't know if the final result was completely fair," referring to the intense competition and rivalry that characterized the encounter.
Commenting on the sending-off incident, he explained, "I don't accept what the player did with the referee. The foul wasn't that serious, but there was no need to hold the ball. Perhaps the referee overreacted," indicating that Camavinga's action put the referee in a difficult position and influenced the final decision.
Koeman also addressed refereeing controversy in general, emphasizing that there are many situations worthy of discussion, especially in major matches that are decided by small details.
The Dutch coach added, "Just like what happened with Barcelona against Atlético Madrid when they played with a numerical disadvantage, Barcelona was the better and stronger team," referring to the ability of big teams to compete even under difficult circumstances.
Koeman's statements come amid significant controversy surrounding the French international's red card, which many within Real Madrid considered a harsh decision that directly impacted the match's outcome, ultimately leading to the Spanish team's elimination.
