Manchester City Expresses Support for Bournemouth's Semenyo After New Racist Abuse
Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo revealed he has been subjected to a fresh wave of online racist abuse this season. The 26-year-old Ghana international shared a screenshot from his Instagram account, showing a racist comment, captioned with "Here we go again."
A Premier League spokesperson expressed the league's dismay at these actions, affirming full support for the player and his club in confronting this unacceptable behaviour. "We are appalled by the unacceptable online racist abuse targeted at Antoine Semenyo," the spokesperson stated. "Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society, and it is clear more needs to be done to address this issue. We will work alongside clubs, football bodies, law enforcement, and social media companies to ensure this remains a priority for everyone."
The official emphasized that individuals identified and convicted of discrimination will face the severest possible penalties, including prison sentences, stadium bans, and criminal records.
Reports indicated that Manchester City club expressed support for the player, offering necessary assistance amidst these recurring incidents. This latest event is part of a series of abuses Semenyo has reported this season, following a similar incident while playing for his former club Bournemouth against Liverpool.
During that season-opening match, referee Anthony Taylor intervened, stopping play due to the reported abuse. This subsequently led to the arrest of a fan named Mark Maugan, who was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence. The trial for the 47-year-old is scheduled to begin on April 22, after he denied the charges before a Liverpool court last December. English authorities and relevant bodies continue their efforts to combat such transgressions in stadiums and on digital platforms.
