Tragedy in Ghana: Berekum Chelsea Player Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Attack
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Monday the death of Dominic Frimpong, a player for Ghanaian club Berekum Chelsea, following an armed attack on the team's bus as they returned from a Ghana Premier League match.
The Ghanaian team's bus was ambushed by a group of armed robbers while the delegation was traveling back to Berekum from Samreboi. The attackers blocked the road to stop the bus before opening fire with firearms and assault rifles. Amidst the panic, the driver attempted to reverse to evade the danger, while players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety, according to a club statement, before the player was shot and succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association conveyed its condolences: “The Ghana Football Association extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all components of Berekum Chelsea Football Club during this difficult time.”
The statement continued: “This tragic incident is a great loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent who embodied the spirit of the league through his dedication and passion.”
The GFA confirmed it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police, as investigations continue to uncover the circumstances of this unfortunate incident, urging all necessary measures to ensure justice is served.
The Ghanaian football governing body will also coordinate with various stakeholders to review and enhance security measures for clubs traveling during local competitions, with the aim of preventing the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
