Real Sociedad President: Copa del Rey Final Win Reinforces Club's Approach
Jokin Aperribay, president of Real Sociedad, expressed significant optimism ahead of his team's anticipated Copa del Rey final clash against Atlético Madrid, scheduled for next Saturday in Seville. Aperribay emphasized the immense importance of this match, to be held at the "La Cartuja" stadium, as the Basque club aims for its second title in five years, following their last triumph in 2021.
The club president highlighted the remarkable improvement in the team's performance since coach Pellegrino Matarazzo took charge three months ago, affirming that reaching major competition finals enhances the club's standing. Aperribay stated: "Real Sociedad belongs to the noble region of Spanish football, and our trophy record shows this. This final represents a consolidation of our way of working and instills hope in both staff and fans." He further added that consistently competing for titles and securing advanced positions in La Liga is the sole path to progress and growth.
Discussing the balance of power in the decisive match, Aperribay rejected the notion of Atlético Madrid being the favorites, expressing his full confidence in his players' abilities. He explained: "I am always optimistic, and for me, Atlético is not the favorite. When our team is on the field, they are always my favorite." He elaborated on the value of a potential achievement, saying: "We hope to win the cup to celebrate with the fans, and achieving a second title within five years would be extraordinary."
These statements come as the team has regained its balance following a previous period under Sergio Francisco's technical management, which Aperribay described as "not the right time" for the former coach's career. Nevertheless, Real Sociedad has successfully reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals five times in the past thirteen years, reflecting the club's sustained competitiveness in domestic competitions before heading to Seville for the anticipated final.
