Italy Faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in World Cup Playoff to End 12-Year Absence
The Italian national team will face Bosnia and Herzegovina next Tuesday in the final of the World Cup playoff. The Azzurri are aiming to secure their place in the finals for the first time in 12 years. The former European champions enter the match, held at Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica, Bosnia, with the ambition of breaking the jinx of World Cup absence that has plagued them in the last two editions.
Italy reached this stage after defeating Northern Ireland 2-0 in the semi-final of the European playoff. Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, booked their spot after overcoming Wales in a penalty shootout. The match will be officiated by French referee Clément Turpin. The stands will see a 20% reduction in overall capacity, implementing a penalty imposed by UEFA due to discriminatory and racist behavior by Bosnian fans in previous matches.
Sports circles are anticipating the special confrontation between veteran Bosnian striker Edin Džeko, aged 40, and three Italian defenders he previously played alongside at club level. Džeko scored his 73rd international goal against Wales. Federico Dimarco, an Inter Milan and Italy national team player, praised the Bosnian striker, stating, “Edin is a great player and a wonderful person.” His teammate Matteo Politano emphasized the importance and difficulty of the encounter, explaining, “We all know what we are playing for. For me and some other senior players, this might be our last chance.”
This match comes amid significant pressure on the Italian national team to avoid missing the World Cup for the third consecutive time, following their playoff exits in previous editions against Sweden and North Macedonia. The team aims to overcome these historical setbacks and secure a victory in Zenica to guarantee their return to the global stage. This is despite previous statements made by Dimarco to clarify his position, where he said, “It was a spontaneous reaction, and I certainly did not mean to offend either Bosnia or Bosnians.”
