UEFA Appoints Clément Turpin for Crucial Italy vs. Bosnia Match
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has confirmed the appointment of French referee Clément Turpin to officiate the upcoming international match between the Italian national team and their Bosnian counterparts. The game is scheduled for Tuesday in Zenica. Turpin's selection for this fixture was made due to the "sensitive" nature of the encounter, with him being considered the most suitable and best referee to handle such a responsibility in major sporting events.
The continental federation's decision to nominate Turpin is based on his prestigious standing in the world of refereeing, especially after he was named the world's best referee by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) three months prior to this appointment. The French referee is a name that enjoys widespread trust among football bodies, which prompted the organizing committee to choose him to lead the anticipated match in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Considering his officiating record, Turpin boasts an impressive history of managing major matches. He previously refereed the 2021 Europa League final between Villarreal and Manchester United, as well as the 2022 Champions League final featuring Liverpool and Real Madrid. Regarding Italian football, the French referee has overseen several important fixtures, including the Italian national team's match against North Macedonia in 2022, which saw Italy fail to qualify for the World Cup finals.
At the club level, the French referee's presence extends to major Italian matches in continental competitions, such as the clash between Inter Milan and AC Milan in the 2023 Champions League, and the encounter between AC Milan and AS Roma in the 2024 Europa League. Turpin began his international career at a young age, becoming the youngest French referee to receive the international badge from FIFA at 27.
