Mokwena Receives Two-Month Suspended Sentence, 14,200 Euros Confiscated Over Currency Smuggling Charge
An Algerian court has issued a two-month suspended prison sentence against South African coach Rulani Mokwena, the former technical director of MC Alger, following his conviction in a currency smuggling case.
The Algerian newspaper "El Khabar" reported that the court in the Algerian capital issued its verdict yesterday, Monday, convicting Mokwena, along with the confiscation of 14,200 euros found in his possession, in addition to a fine of 350 euros.
Authorities had arrested the coach last Saturday at Houari Boumediene International Airport after he was caught attempting to leave the country without declaring a sum of hard currency.
Despite the verdict, Mokwena was released after completing legal procedures, at a time when media reports indicate he is close to embarking on a new coaching experience in the Libyan League, through Al-Ittihad Club.
It is worth noting that MC Alger had previously announced Mokwena's departure at his request, and he was replaced by Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia.
