Olympique Lyon Talent Steve Kango Shines in Europa League Debut
Nineteen-year-old talent Steve Kango made his senior debut for French club Olympique Lyon during their Europa League clash at Balaídos Stadium. The academy graduate's inclusion in the starting lineup was an emergency measure, necessitated by a severe injury crisis affecting the squad and the unavailability of several other players who were not registered for this season's continental competition.
The young player delivered a remarkable performance in his first official test, achieving a passing accuracy of 94 percent after completing 50 out of 53 passes. He also contributed to creating two attacking opportunities and successfully executed five defensive interventions, preventing opponents from getting past him throughout the match. In this regard, Olympique Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca praised the promising player's level, stating: "For me, he was one of the best players on the pitch. He showed a lot of character, and that's one of the reasons I put him in as a starter," emphasizing that the player's maturity was crucial in granting him this opportunity.
Kango is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup for the upcoming Ligue 1 match against Le Havre, based on the strong display he delivered in his European debut. The rising defender joined Olympique Lyon's youth ranks in 2021 at the age of 14 and is considered a key player for the club's reserve team, which competes in the French fifth division. UEFA, however, selected Endrick as the Man of the Match after he scored the equalizing goal for the French team.
