Nantes Fans Protest Club Management Over PSG Match Rescheduling
During Nantes' recent Ligue 1 match against Angers, widespread protests erupted among Nantes supporters, led by the Brigade Loire group. Fans vehemently condemned the decision to reschedule their anticipated fixture against Paris Saint-Germain.
The supporters expressed their dismay at the French Professional Football League's (LFP) decision, which came in response to a request from the Parisian club. PSG sought sufficient rest periods for its squad ahead of its continental commitments in the UEFA Champions League.
Protesters distributed caricatures deemed insulting, depicting Nantes president Waldemar Kita polishing the shoe of PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. This imagery was intended to highlight what they perceived as their club's subservience to the capital team. During the match, fans also unfurled sharp critical banners, rejecting the decision to postpone the game, which was originally set for March 13-15, to the week beginning April 20.
This alteration was made at PSG's behest, as they desired a rest period between the first and second legs of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against English side Chelsea, scheduled for March 11 and March 17, respectively. Nantes currently finds itself in a precarious position in the Ligue 1 standings, occupying 17th place, second-to-last. This situation has only intensified the anger of its supporters towards decisions they view as unfair and detrimental to the team's focus in its battle for survival.
Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré commented on the crisis, questioning the club's real agency in such matters. He stated, "Do we really have a choice, and did we have a choice last year?" alluding to scheduling pressures.
In a similar vein, analyst Daniel Riolo criticized the sacrifice of local clubs' interests on RMC radio. He remarked, "If you are providing a service, I have no problem with us being friendly and preferring our teams to shine in European cups, unless it is against your own interest." Riolo suggested that the club was harming itself by offering such concessions to others while struggling in the league.
