Flamengo Sack Coach Filipe Luís Despite 8-0 Victory
Brazilian club Flamengo announced the dismissal of first-team football coach Filipe Luís just hours after their emphatic 8-0 victory over Madureira in the Carioca Championship semi-final in Rio de Janeiro.
Flamengo stated in a press release published on their website: “As of Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the first team,” extending their gratitude to the former Brazilian international full-back for his contributions during his tenure.
According to local media, Sporting Director José Boto informed the coach of the decision minutes after his press conference concluded, with Filipe Luís reportedly appearing surprised.
Assistant coach Iván Balanco and fitness coach Diego Linhares also departed the club.
The dismissal of the 40-year-old coach came after Flamengo had secured their place in the regional tournament final with the comprehensive win, where they are set to face their traditional rivals Fluminense.
Despite boasting the largest budget in South America, the year had not been favorable for the team. They lost the Brazilian Super Cup 2-0 to Corinthians, the first title they had aimed for this season, and also suffered a 3-2 defeat to Argentina’s Lanús in the Copa Sudamericana final at the Maracanã.
Since taking over as Flamengo coach in September 2024, Filipe Luís had secured five titles: the Copa Libertadores, the Brazilian League, the Copa do Brasil, the Supercopa do Brasil, and the Carioca Championship for Rio state clubs.
Last December, he also lost the Intercontinental Cup final to French club Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in Doha.
