Allegri Clarifies Stance on Milan's Attacking Trio Formation
AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that he will continue to use the attacking trio formation, known as "Tridente," as a tactical option during matches rather than as a starting lineup. Allegri explained that this approach serves as a solution for encounters in their advanced stages, noting that maintaining a high tempo demands significant physical effort from wide players. Starting with this system from the first minute could lead to a loss of focus and clarity in technical performance.
The coach emphasized in his statements that the priority lies in achieving objectives and results, regardless of the tactical systems employed. Allegri stated: "Currently, the attacking trio is a solution during the course of the match because the high tempo imposes hard work on the wingers, and we lose some of our mental presence." Allegri added that the team had required attacking players at certain points in recent matches, noting that Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao are regaining full physical fitness, making a three-man attack possible in the future.
For his part, Portuguese forward Rafael Leao displayed tactical flexibility regarding the various attacking roles set by the coaching staff, expressing his comfort with the required offensive movements. Leao said: "I feel comfortable in the center-forward position; I have played in this position since I was young and I know the required movements well." This strategic shift comes after Milan began their last match against Cremonese with a 3-5-2 formation before the coach switched to a three-man attack in the final half-hour of the encounter to enhance offensive pressure.
Despite increasing calls from the Italian club's fans for a bolder attacking starting lineup, technical data revealed that the goals recently scored against Cremonese came from a corner kick and a counter-attack. Allegri believes that the permanent implementation of this system requires a sufficient number of fit attackers available on the bench to ensure the maintenance of technical and physical balance and to avoid a decline in physical performance during the match.
