Benfica Suspends Five Members, Initiates Expulsion Over Racist Behavior at Bernabéu
Portuguese club Benfica has announced the temporary suspension of five of its members and the cancellation of their 'Red Pass' entry cards. This action follows an internal investigation into racist behavior observed in the stands of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium during the second leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff against Spanish giants Real Madrid. In an official statement released on Friday, February 27, the club clarified that these individuals are currently undergoing disciplinary procedures that could ultimately lead to their permanent expulsion from club membership.
Benfica's management affirmed in its statement that it "does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to work resolutely against any behavior that undermines the values of the club, sport, and society." The club noted that the measures taken are a direct result of monitoring inappropriate behavior of a racist nature in the stands during the match held on February 17. In this context, the club emphasized that such actions are "incompatible with the values and principles that govern the club," necessitating immediate intervention to preserve the sports institution's identity.
The statement from the Portuguese club indicated that the legal proceedings initiated against these members "could lead to the application of the maximum penalty stipulated in the statutes, which is expulsion." This step reflects the seriousness with which the club addresses incidents that tarnish the spirit of sportsmanship. These sanctions also come amidst a charged atmosphere surrounding the continental clash, as the first leg had previously sparked widespread controversy due to accusations of racist remarks directed at player Vinicius Jr.
It is worth noting that UEFA had temporarily suspended player Gianluca Prestianni from participating in the second leg following those events, while Real Madrid secured their qualification for the Champions League round of 16. Benfica's internal investigations underscore the club's commitment to monitoring its fans' behavior and cooperating with relevant authorities to curb discriminatory practices in European stadiums.
