Spanish Prosecution Seeks One-Year Prison Sentence for Real Oviedo Fan Over Racist Actions Towards Mbappé
The Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office has requested a one-year prison sentence and financial compensation exceeding 2,000 euros for a Real Oviedo fan. The fan is accused of directing racist insults towards Real Madrid player Kylian Mbappé. This judicial demand follows the observation of offensive actions and monkey gestures targeting the French star during the match between the two teams on August 24 at the Carlos Tartiere stadium.
The controversial incidents occurred around the 37th minute of the game, coinciding with Mbappé scoring Real Madrid's first goal. Cameras from Movistar's "El Día Después" (The Day After) program captured the fan directing what were described as racist insults directly towards the pitch. In this context, the Public Prosecutor's Office affirmed that these events gained widespread global attention, exceeding 305 million views across various platforms, which amplified the negative impact of the incident.
The Public Prosecutor's Office clarified in its legal brief that the fan's state of intoxication at the time of the incident was considered a mitigating factor for the proposed sentence. Nevertheless, the request for imprisonment and financial compensation was maintained to redress the moral damages suffered by the French player. This step is part of ongoing judicial efforts to curb racism in sports competitions within Spain through the implementation of strict legal measures against offenders.
