UEFA Fines and Bans Olympique Marseille Over Pyrotechnics
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced sanctions against Olympique Marseille, including a financial fine and a ban on selling away tickets to their fans for upcoming European competitions. This decision comes after the club's supporters used prohibited pyrotechnics during a European match, prompting the federation to take strict action.
Specifically, the club has been fined €25,000, and the ban prevents the sale of tickets to their fans for their next European away match. UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed the measure, stating: “The sale of tickets to Olympique Marseille supporters for their next match in UEFA club competitions has been banned.” In the same context, UEFA has imposed a new two-year probationary period on Olympique Marseille, related to their fans' travel to away matches, effective from the date of the decision.
These penalties were imposed due to the use of prohibited pyrotechnics by the club's fans during an away match against Club Brugge on last January 28, as part of the Champions League competition. Given Olympique Marseille's elimination from European competitions this season, the away fan ban will be enforced in the 2026-2027 season, should the club qualify for any European competition at that time.
It is worth noting that the club was already subject to a previous suspended sentence prior to this latest decision.
