Claude Le Roy: "AFCON Every Four Years is a Catastrophic Decision That Serves FIFA's Interests"
French coach Claude Le Roy has criticized the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years instead of two, stating that this move solely serves the interests of FIFA, the international football governing body.
Le Roy, who has extensive coaching experience in Africa, told "BS Sports" network: "It's a catastrophic decision. Look at these beautiful stadiums we are seeing now (in Morocco). When the Africa Cup of Nations is held every two years, it allows for the construction of such stadiums in Africa, with countries investing in facilities and infrastructure."
He added angrily: "Organizing the tournament every four years will contribute to the decline of African football. This decision is in FIFA's interest, allowing them to comfortably schedule additional dates for their own tournaments. For me, this is unacceptable."
Regarding Morocco's hosting of AFCON 2025, Le Roy commented: "The organization is superb; there are beautiful stadiums and training grounds, and especially the wonderful Moroccan fans. We haven't seen great matches so far, with the exception of Ayoub El Kaabi's fantastic goal. Morocco hasn't performed at a high level, and the tournament has started at a slow pace, with an average standard."
It is worth noting that Claude Le Roy has spent many years in Africa, coaching numerous national teams, most notably Cameroon, Senegal, and Ghana.
