Morocco and Syria: No Prior Arab Cup Meetings, Atlas Lions Hold Historical Edge
The Moroccan national team is preparing to face its Syrian counterpart next Thursday afternoon in the Arab Cup quarter-finals. This comes after the "Atlas Lions" qualified at the top of their group following a victory over the Saudi national team, while Syria secured their progression by finishing second behind Palestine.
Historically, the two national teams have met only three times. Morocco managed to win on two occasions, compared to one victory for Syria. Notably, there have been no previous encounters between them in the Arab Cup competition.
The first match between the two teams dates back to the summer of 1963 during the Mediterranean Games in Naples, Italy, which the Moroccan national team won by a single goal.
The second encounter was a friendly in March 1977, where Syria secured a 2-0 victory.
The two sides met for a third time in February 1981, also in a friendly match, which concluded with a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
