Flick: 'Why Not Coach Messi? He's the Best Player of the Last Decade'

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick spoke during the press conference ahead of Saturday's La Liga Matchday 13 clash against Athletic Bilbao (16:15 GMT+1). This match marks a significant occasion as the team returns to its home ground, Camp Nou, which will accommodate up to 46,000 spectators.

Flick also addressed the situation of his star player, Lamine Yamal, stating: “He has worked very hard over the past two weeks, and I am happy with what I have seen. This injury has its ups and downs, but I believe he is doing well.”

Regarding the Spanish Football Federation's angry statement about Yamal remaining at Barcelona and missing the recent November international camp, Flick added: “We did what was necessary. Lamine is our player, and we must take care of him. I believe the decision for him to stay here and not participate with the national team was correct. His injury requires discipline, and he has been very disciplined over the last two weeks. We are now focused on the next four weeks, nine matches. This is our job. I will not pay attention to external noise. What I want is for him to be happy and to train with us… and that’s it.”

On the importance of Raphinha's return and Rashford's struggles, Flick commented: “Rashford has been suffering from a fever yesterday and today. The good news is that Raphinha is back. We will see if he is ready for ten or 15 minutes, or a little more, but his return alone is positive.”

Commenting on a picture of Lionel Messi at Camp Nou and whether he would like to coach him, Flick replied: “Why not? He is the best player of the last ten years or more. I have always loved his style of play. But he is under contract until 2028, and I am until 2027… I don't think this question is directed at me.”
