More Than 100 Players Suspended in Turkey Amid Betting Scandal
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has sanctioned 102 players from the first and second divisions of the domestic league, suspending them for varying periods as part of investigations into alleged match-fixing and betting.
The federation had previously suspended 149 referees and assistant referees after their involvement in betting on matches was proven.
The investigation also led to the arrest of eight individuals, including the president of a first-division club. Additionally, 1,024 more players have been referred to the disciplinary committee as investigations continue. Matches in the second and third divisions were also suspended for two weeks.
The Professional Football Disciplinary Board, affiliated with the Turkish Federation, announced that the sanctions included 25 players from the top flight (Super Lig) and 77 players from the second division. The suspension periods ranged from 45 days to 12 months.
