Real Madrid Presidential Race Heats Up: Riquelme Bets on Legends, Pérez Announces Mourinho's Return
The intensity of the electoral campaigns for the presidency of Spanish club Real Madrid has escalated as candidates Enrique Riquelme and Florentino Pérez unveiled their strategic plans and the names of the sports personnel who will shape their future projects for managing the club. This move aims to win the support of general assembly members by promising major signings and radical administrative changes to enhance the royal club's standing.
On June 1, candidate Enrique Riquelme announced the selection of club legend Raúl González as the sporting director for his project, integrating prominent names like Fernando Hierro, Iker Casillas, and Vicente del Bosque into the administrative structure. Riquelme justified his choice of Raúl, stating, “For this project and in the current situation the club is in, we must return to those values, to the Madridista DNA. A Real Madrid legend, surrounded by great professionals, must lead us. No one knows the White House better than Raúl, whom we see as the right person to lead this phase.” He later clarified that he had reached agreements to sign Erling Haaland and Rodri, signing a financial guarantee that obliges him to pay membership fees for all partners if his promises falter. He confirmed this by saying, “If I fail on any of my promises regarding these players, I have signed a guarantee to cover all club members' dues for the next season.”
For his part, Florentino Pérez officially confirmed the selection of Portuguese coach José Mourinho to take over the team's technical management if he is re-elected. This announcement coincided with reports of potential reinforcements including Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries. Pérez also revealed his move to secure a record-breaking deal, stating, “On Tuesday, I will present the biggest offer in the club's history for a player, around 150 million euros.” This move has fueled widespread speculation about targeting young talents such as João Neves, Olise, or Vitinha to strengthen the Merengues squad in the upcoming period.
This competition has also included various proposals, such as Riquelme's “Member City” project aimed at strengthening fan engagement. In recent days, there has been a sharp exchange of criticism between the two parties regarding previous administrative eras. This reflects each candidate's desire to present a comprehensive vision that balances restoring the club's historical identity with ensuring sporting excellence through massive signings that meet the ambitions of the Spanish team's supporters.
