Refereeing Directorate to Implement 'Referee Cam' Technology in Raja-Wydad Derby
Radouane Jiyed, Director of the National Refereeing Directorate, has announced the implementation of a new technology during the highly anticipated "Derby" match between Raja and Wydad Athletic, part of the 20th round of the Professional League.
Jiyed held a press conference to discuss the latest developments in national refereeing and VAR technology. He specifically highlighted the "referee camera" (body cam) technology, which the National Refereeing Directorate will utilize for the first time in the Professional League during the Raja-Wydad fixture.
In this context, Jiyed stated, "We will try to use this technology experimentally in this match, and perhaps generalize it later to other matches, depending on the available resources."
He further explained, "We want viewers to understand how the referee perceives the game from their perspective when making a decision, because what appears easy from the outside is often difficult on the field. If this technology yields positive results, it could become a permanent feature in the league."
The "referee camera" is a compact recording device affixed to the referee's body during a match, typically on the chest or head. It records everything the referee sees from their direct viewpoint on the pitch.
This technology aims to document refereeing decisions from the official's perspective, offering visual content that provides a more accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding a decision. It can also be used in television broadcasts to deliver realistic footage reflecting the match atmosphere from within the green rectangle, in addition to its potential for later analysis and evaluation of referee performance.
