UEFA Explains Reasons for Arsenal Penalty Reversal Against Atlético Madrid
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the official reasons that led to the disallowance of a penalty kick for English club Arsenal in their match against Spanish side Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. In light of the refereeing controversy that accompanied the encounter, UEFA explained the reversal of the decision in the final moments of the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The incident began when Dutch referee Danny Makkelie decided to award a foul in favour of substitute Eberechi Eze after contact with Atlético defender David Hancko. However, a review of the incident using Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology showed that there was no foul warranting a penalty. UEFA confirmed in its official statement that "Atlético player number 17 did not commit a foul against the opponent," which led to play continuing normally without a change in the score.
This refereeing review is based on the protocol applied in continental competitions, which stipulates that VAR technology should only intervene in cases of clear and obvious errors. Meanwhile, attention is now turning to the return leg scheduled for next Tuesday to determine which team will qualify for the final, as the chances remain equal between the London and Madrid clubs following this draw.
