Chamakh Discusses Arsenal Experience with Van Persie: "He Speaks Moroccan Darija Better Than Me"
Former Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh recently spoke about his time at Arsenal, revealing details of his relationship with former Dutch teammate Robin van Persie, with whom he competed for a starting spot in the London club's attack.
During an appearance on a beIN Sports program, Chamakh explained that his first meeting with Van Persie in the dressing room was a surprise. He recounted, "On my first day in the Arsenal dressing room, Van Persie was there. I barely greeted him when he started speaking to me in Moroccan Darija. I was a bit surprised because he spoke very well, even better than me."
Chamakh added, "He then told me his wife was Moroccan and that he had children with her, which surprised me greatly."
The former Moroccan international continued, emphasizing that their relationship was based on respect despite the intense competition for a regular place. He stated, "From the start, he tried to make me feel comfortable, even though he was a direct competitor for me within the team, and he was a major rival on and off the pitch."
Chamakh went on to highly praise Van Persie's abilities, explaining, "When I saw him on the field, I realized he was a genius player. I was realistic; I saw that he was better than me, and I didn't lie to myself. What he produced in training was astonishing; he was a true phenomenon."
Chamakh also admitted that he never considered comparing himself to his teammate or demanding his place in the starting lineup. He clarified, "I couldn't go to the coach and ask to play in his place; that was impossible. All I wanted was to get more playing minutes."
The former Moroccan international concluded by emphasizing the importance of realism in a player's career, saying, "I appreciated him as a player and as a person, but perhaps this didn't help me much, because football sometimes requires a degree of selfishness and overconfidence to achieve success."
