UEFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Bayern Munich Over Photographer Injuries and Fan Misconduct
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the initiation of formal disciplinary proceedings against German club Bayern Munich. This action follows a series of incidents involving their fans during the recent match against Spanish giants Real Madrid. The move comes after observing organizational and behavioral transgressions by supporters, with UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body set to examine the case file and make appropriate decisions.
The list of charges against the Bavarian club includes blocking public passageways in the stands, throwing objects onto the pitch, an overflow of spectators, and displaying an inappropriate banner with anti-UEFA messages. This disorder led to injuries among several photojournalists who were positioned in the restricted area between the stands and the advertising boards, as fans breached this zone to celebrate goals and bypass security barriers.
The incursion into the restricted area occurred twice: first, after Luis Diaz scored the equalizer, and again after Michael Olise netted the winning goal, causing photographers to be crushed and injured. Kai Pfaffenbach, a Reuters photographer, commented on his condition, stating, “For those wondering, I'm fine, some bruises but no broken bones or brain injuries.” He then questioned the organizational lapses, adding, “But the question is, how could this happen?”
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Bayern Munich officials contacted the injured photographers and the involved fans, who expressed their apologies for the incidents. The club faces this new investigation after having previously been sanctioned with a partial stadium closure last January, following the use of pyrotechnics in a match held in December, once again placing the team's fan record under the scrutiny of continental penalties.
