Shunsuke Nakamura Joins Japan National Team Coaching Staff Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former international star Shunsuke Nakamura has joined the Japan national team's coaching staff as an assistant under head coach Hajime Moriyasu. This move comes 56 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, as the Japanese team seeks to bolster its coaching staff with experienced personnel ahead of the global finals.

Following his tenure as an assistant coach with Yokohama FC from 2023 to 2026, Nakamura decided to accept the new international challenge after receiving direct support from Moriyasu. Nakamura commented on his decision, stating, “I am pleased to announce my joining the coaching staff of the Japan national team as a coach.” He noted that he deeply considered the impact of joining at such a crucial time before the World Cup finals, but Coach Moriyasu's enthusiasm encouraged him to accept the role.

On the international stage, Nakamura represented his country in 98 matches, scoring 24 goals, and contributed to the team's two AFC Asian Cup titles in 2000 and 2004. Meanwhile, Hajime Moriyasu is set to become the first coach to lead the Japanese national team in two consecutive World Cup editions, reflecting the Japan Football Association's desire to maintain team stability and reinforce it with names possessing extensive field experience.

Nakamura's professional career saw him play for several European clubs, including Italy's Reggina, Scotland's Celtic, and Spain's Espanyol, which will provide the coaching staff with diverse technical insight before the anticipated tournament.
