Javier Mascherano Departs Inter Miami for Personal Reasons After Leading Club to League Title
Inter Miami CF has announced the departure of Argentine coach Javier Mascherano from his position due to personal reasons. This move comes just four months after he led the team to its first-ever Major League Soccer (MLS) title in 2025. The club revealed that the 41-year-old coach, who took over in 2024, decided to unexpectedly end his tenure with the team, despite a strong start to the current season which sees the club in third place in the Eastern Conference standings after seven matches.
The club has appointed Guillermo Hoyos, the current Sporting Director and former Barcelona B coach, to take over as head coach immediately, succeeding Mascherano. These technical changes occur during a significant transitional phase for the club, especially as the decision to leave comes less than two weeks after Inter Miami's new stadium inauguration. Regarding his departure, Javier Mascherano stated: "I want to inform everyone that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my time as coach of Inter Miami. I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the best for this club."
In his statements, Mascherano expressed his appreciation for the environment he worked in during his tenure, thanking the management and players for the collective efforts that resulted in historic moments for the team. The departing coach also said: "I want to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, and every staff member who is part of this organization for the collective effort, and I especially thank the players who made it possible for us to live unforgettable moments." Mascherano, who previously coached the Argentina national team at the 2024 Olympics, had played alongside current team stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Spanish club Barcelona and with the Argentine national team during his playing career.
