French League First: Referee Bastien Explains VAR Decision to Fans Over PA System
Referee Benoît Bastien made history in the French League on Sunday, becoming the first official to explain a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision directly to the public via stadium loudspeakers.
During the French Championship match between Olympique Lyonnais and Lorient, Bastien used the loudspeaker to clarify the circumstances of a controversial incident in the penalty area, in front of thousands of fans at Groupama Stadium.
The incident began after a VAR review for a penalty claim by Lorient, following a push on player Bamba Dieng by Diego Moreira. However, the referee clearly announced that the final decision was no penalty.
Referee Benoît Bastien explained to those present, stating: "After reviewing the potential penalty incident, it was determined there was a preceding foul by Lorient's number 77, Katsieris. The final decision is no penalty, and a free-kick is awarded."
The public in the stands received this public explanation with warm applause and positive interaction. This trial follows a previous technical test of the microphone system last week during the Paris Saint-Germain vs. Toulouse match, which did not involve actual use.
This measure is considered a significant step in developing referee-fan communication in the French League, as the foul committed by Panos Katsieris was the primary reason for nullifying the presumed penalty.
Despite the pressure surrounding the incident, the live explanation helped calm objections on the field and provided greater transparency for fans who followed the decision's details moment by moment from the stands.
