Garcia and De Bruyne Back Lukaku Amid Napoli Recovery Dispute
Belgium national team coach Rudi Garcia and player Kevin De Bruyne have defended their teammate Romelu Lukaku amidst an ongoing dispute with Italian club Napoli regarding the pace of his injury recovery. Garcia explained that the Belgian striker has not yet reached full physical readiness, necessitating a special rehabilitation program that considers mental aspects and the player's fear of re-injury.
Garcia affirmed in his statements that Lukaku needs additional time to regain his usual form. He stated: "Lukaku was not 100% ready and had to follow a specific recovery program. It's natural for him to want to return to his peak, and when you are not fully fit, the mental aspect plays a significant role due to the fear of getting injured again." The coach, who previously managed Napoli, also noted that he had communicated with the medical staff to ensure the best path for the player's return.
For his part, Kevin De Bruyne highlighted the complexities of the rehabilitation process, acknowledging the "noise" surrounding the Italian club. De Bruyne commented: "Romelu and I followed different paths after our injuries. While I underwent a full rehabilitation program in Belgium, Lukaku traveled between Antwerp and Naples. When there are two different visions, it becomes difficult to work together, and these differences are not ideal if you want to regain your fitness." The Manchester City star, who has suffered similar injuries in the recent past, pointed out that this disparity led to difficulties in achieving full readiness.
Amidst the Belgian national team's preparations for a friendly tour, which includes matches against the United States and Mexico, Garcia expressed his hope for Lukaku's swift return to Napoli's ranks for greater participation. Garcia emphasized the necessity of allowing Romelu to do what is best to regain his form, stating: "It is essential for the club and for us that the player returns to full fitness as soon as possible, and everyone must be convinced of the need to allow him to do what he deems appropriate." This comes with the understanding previously shown by Napoli coach Antonio Conte regarding the striker's recovery circumstances.
