UEFA Rejects English Clubs' Request to Amend Champions League Rule
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has rejected a request from English clubs to amend the Champions League regulations. This decision reflects the ongoing debate surrounding the balance of continental competition.
According to press reports, English clubs sought to expand the Champions League squad list to 28 players, up from the current 25, to better manage the increased fixture congestion under the competition's new format. However, UEFA officially decided to reject this proposal.
This decision primarily stems from strong opposition from several Spanish clubs, including Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, and Real Sociedad. These clubs expressed concerns that such an amendment would grant an additional advantage to English clubs, given their significant financial power compared to other European competitors.
This debate emerges as the Champions League operates under a new system that has increased the number of matches, raising concerns about fixture congestion, particularly for major clubs. Nevertheless, UEFA preferred to maintain the current balance and avoid introducing new changes at this time, leaving open the possibility of revisiting the issue for discussion in the future.
