Al-Ittihad Libya Announces Signing of South African Rulani Mokwena
Al-Ittihad Club of Libya announced on Tuesday the appointment of South African coach Rulani Mokwena to lead the team's technical staff, following his recent spell with MC Alger.
Al-Ittihad's Facebook account posted a statement, writing: "From the southernmost tip of the continent, where his star rose as a distinguished coach, especially with the two most famous teams there, dominating his country's league. As for the present, he has chosen to be here to lead the nation's leader and its most decorated club."
Mokwena previously coached Mamelodi Sundowns between October 2022 and July 2024, winning the South African league title. He then led Wydad AC from July 2024 to April 2025, and also had a brief experience with MC Alger since last July, during which he won the Algerian Super Cup.
Algerian newspaper "El Khabar" reported that an Algerian court had issued a two-month suspended prison sentence against South African coach Rulani Mokwena, the former technical director of MC Alger, in connection with a currency smuggling case. The sum of 14,200 euros found in his possession was seized, and he was also fined 350 euros.
It is worth noting that MC Alger had previously announced Mokwena's departure at his own request, and he was subsequently replaced by Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia.
