Cologne Stadium Announcer Faces Investigation Over Public VAR Criticism
Michael Trippel, the stadium announcer for German club FC Köln, has sparked widespread controversy after making emotional and critical statements regarding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions over the loudspeakers during his team's Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund. Trippel, who has held the position for 27 years, described one refereeing decision as "disgusting and repulsive," a move that constitutes a clear violation of both German Football Association (DFB) regulations and UEFA rules, which mandate complete neutrality for stadium announcers.
These actions are expected to lead to legal repercussions, with the German Football Association anticipated to launch an official investigation into the incident, given its breach of the DFB's "Stadium Announcers' Guide" and international safety regulations. Thomas Kessler, FC Köln's sporting director, expressed his dissatisfaction with the public display, stating, "I don't like what happened. It's not right for the announcer to express his emotions over the microphone during a Bundesliga match, and we will discuss this matter later." He further emphasized that such public emotional outbursts are unacceptable in professional competitions.
Following the match, which saw Köln lose 1-2 to their visitors, the 71-year-old announcer issued an official apology for his conduct, explaining that his frustration was the primary motivator for his words. Trippel stated, "My comments were driven by emotion and frustration towards VAR, which has harmed us on several occasions this season." Meanwhile, General Manager Philipp Türoff underscored the club's management's rejection of such transgressions, which deviate from the strict regulatory framework enforced in German stadiums.
