Idrissa Gana Gueye praised the leadership role of his compatriot Sadio Mane following their qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations final, after overcoming Egypt. He affirmed that the Al-Nassr player is capable of leading the "Teranga Lions" to achieve the continental title.

Gana Gueye commented (jokingly) on Mane's statement that this might be his "last tournament," saying: "He is not a prophet, he doesn't know the future.
