Aubameyang Returns to Marseille, Prepares for Nantes Clash
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to play for Olympique Marseille against Nantes on Sunday, following his return from a challenging Africa Cup of Nations campaign with the Gabon national team.
Aubameyang's involvement in the tournament was marked by a left thigh injury and tensions over his management between his club, Marseille, and the national team. The player featured in Gabon's 0-1 loss to Cameroon and scored in their 2-3 defeat against Mozambique before being released early from the squad.
Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma explained, "We were following a protocol, which was agreed upon with his club. Once Gabon no longer had any chance of qualifying, we agreed again to send him back so he could continue his treatment." Following the Africa Cup of Nations, Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga were suspended by the Gabonese government.
For his part, the Marseille coach stated, "Unfortunately, things didn't go well with Gabon, but it's always good to have him in the squad... He might play against Nantes on Sunday." Aubameyang has trained normally and is expected to start the match.
