Idrissa Gueye: 'Disappointed with Only Three Goals Against Botswana; Respecting the Opponent Means Scoring More When Superior'
Idrissa Gana Gueye expressed his dissatisfaction with Senegal's 3-0 victory over Botswana on Tuesday in the opening round of the Africa Cup of Nations. He emphasized that when a team is superior to its opponent, it should aim to score as many goals as possible.
The "Lions of Teranga" dominated the match, maintaining 68% possession compared to Botswana's 32%. Sadio Mané's teammates registered 22 shots on goal, with 13 of them on target, while their opponents failed to record any shots on target.
The Everton midfielder, Gueye, stated in media remarks: "It's good to win 3-0 and score three goals without conceding any. However, I believe it's a shame to settle for just three goals. When you are better than the opposing team, you have to beat them by a significant margin; that's how we show respect to the opponent. We were too lenient in front of goal, and these are things we need to correct in upcoming matches if we want to go far in the tournament."
It is worth noting that Senegal will face DR Congo in the second round, with the match scheduled for this Saturday at 16:00 GMT+1 at the Grand Stade de Tanger.
