Boufal Faces Complex Situation at Union Saint-Gilloise, Potential Departure Looms

Belgian website "sudinfo" reported that Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal is experiencing a difficult period at Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise, with his role significantly diminishing this season, despite being in full physical readiness for weeks, according to sources close to the player.

Boufal has only featured for 240 minutes across 20 matches since the start of the season, without a single start. This low tally does not reflect the player's notable value and extensive experience in France, England, and Spain. His league appearances have been limited to mere minutes, while he has remained on the bench against major teams in the Champions League.

Coach David Hubert attempted to explain the player's situation by stating that "the team has 25 players ready to start as regulars," adding that Boufal "has shown good levels when coming on as a substitute." However, these explanations have not convinced the player, who feels disappointed by the lack of sufficient opportunities to showcase his abilities.

Sources close to the club suggest that Union Saint-Gilloise's playing style, which relies on high pressing and physical intensity, might not suit Boufal. He primarily depends on skill, dribbling, and creating solutions, a "type of player who has become rare in modern football," according to the same source.

Despite being under contract until June 2026, consistent reports indicate that the club's management might open the door for the player's departure during the winter transfer window if a suitable offer is received.

Uncertainty continues to surround Boufal's situation. He has preferred to remain silent since his transfer to the team in the summer of 2024, having not made any media statements to date, which further raises questions about his immediate future.
