Iraq Eliminates UAE with Dramatic 2-1 Win, Advances to World Cup Global Playoff

The Iraqi national team has secured qualification for the global playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2-1 victory over the UAE. The crucial second-leg match of the Asian playoff final was held today, Tuesday, at Basra International Stadium.

The UAE took the lead in the 52nd minute through Caio Lucas. However, Mohanad Ali leveled the score for Iraq in the 66th minute, setting the stage for a tense finish.

In a thrilling climax, the "Lions of Mesopotamia" clinched their spot in the global playoff with a penalty kick in the 90+17th minute, converted by Amir Al-Ammari. The first leg of the tie had ended in a 1-1 draw.

Iraq will now participate in the global playoff scheduled for next March. This playoff will feature representatives from Africa (DR Congo), South America (Bolivia), CONCACAF (two teams), and Oceania (New Caledonia), all vying for two remaining qualification spots for the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
