Trump Threatens 2026 World Cup Venue Changes Seven Months Before Kick-off!
U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of withdrawing some Democratic-led host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, just seven months before the global football event is set to begin. This statement was made during the latest 2026 World Cup task force meeting, held as usual at the White House, with Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance. The remarks have reignited questions about the fate of several confirmed host cities, particularly those governed by Democrats.
During the meeting, which also included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Trump was asked about Seattle's newly elected socialist mayor, Katie Wilson. He responded by saying, "If we see there's any potential problem, I'm going to ask Gianni (Infantino) to move the event to another city."
Trump added, "So, if we see any problem in Seattle, where they have a very liberal/communist mayor, we'll say, 'Gianni, can we move the games from here?' I don't think they'll have that problem, but we will move the event to a place where it's well-received and safe."
In contrast, CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani had settled the matter just over a month prior during an event in London. He stated, "It's a FIFA tournament, and FIFA makes those decisions. With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them and will endure their governments, systems, and slogans."
The United States, co-hosting the World Cup with Mexico and Canada, has 11 confirmed host cities for matches. Most of these cities are led by Democratic mayors, including Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, and Seattle.
The World Cup draw is expected to take place in Washington on December 5, with the U.S. President anticipated to attend, similar to his presence at the Club World Cup final held last summer in New York and New Jersey.
