Young Africans and Azam to Host AS FAR and Wydad in Zanzibar Instead of Tanzania
Tanzanian clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup have decided to host their group stage opponents in Zanzibar instead of mainland Tanzania.
Hussein Ahmada Vuai, Secretary-General of the Zanzibar Football Federation, confirmed to "The Citizen" newspaper that the three Tanzanian clubs involved in the Champions League and Confederation Cup have received official permission to host their guests in Zanzibar, specifically at Amani Stadium.
This decision affects Moroccan clubs AS FAR and Wydad AC. AS FAR will visit Young Africans for their CAF Champions League group stage opener (November 21-23), while Wydad AC will face Azam on November 30 in the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The decision for Tanzanian clubs to play in Zanzibar stems from security concerns. The country has experienced several protests since the general elections held on October 29, which elected the President, Parliament, and local councils.
