CAF Announces Expansion of Women's Africa Cup of Nations to 16 Teams Starting 2026
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Wednesday the expansion of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from 12 to 16 teams, starting with the next edition to be held in Morocco between March 17 and April 3, 2026.
CAF's Executive Committee approved a selection mechanism to determine the four additional teams, given that the qualification phase for the 2026 edition has already concluded.
Based on the current FIFA Women's World Ranking, the four highest-ranked teams among those eliminated in the final qualification round were selected to complete the list of participants.
Cameroon (ranked 66th globally), Côte d'Ivoire (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) will join the 12 teams that had previously qualified for the continental finals. These are: Morocco (as hosts), Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Cape Verde, South Africa, and Senegal.
This decision will allow a greater number of teams to participate in Africa's premier women's football continental tournament, contributing to its continuous growth and expanding its global reach.
