Enrique Riquelme stated, "If I become president of Madrid, Rodri will play for Madrid. He is a great Spanish player, a Golden Ball winner, and represents the profile the club needs. With me as president, Real Madrid will have a Spanish player at the World Cup," highlighting the necessity of strong local representation within the Meringues' starting lineup.

Rodri, for his part, clarified his position regarding these reports while with the Spanish national team, emphasizing that his current focus is entirely on fulfilling his duties as captain of the national squad in international competitions.
