Rome City Council Grants Final Approval for AS Roma's New Pietralata Stadium Project
The Rome Capitoline Assembly has granted its final approval for the technical and economic feasibility project of AS Roma's new stadium in the Pietralata area. The decision, made during a session held on March 13, 2026, confirmed the public interest of the project, indicating that the club has met the requirements set by the Rome City Council. This approval marks the beginning of the second administrative phase of the legal process preceding the actual construction.
The total investment allocated by the Friedkin family, owners of the club, amounts to approximately €1.047 billion, with €670 million earmarked for construction. The new sports facility is planned to have a capacity of 60,605 seats, including a dedicated stand behind the goal that can accommodate around 23,000 fans, making it one of the largest stands globally.
The architectural plan for the site also includes the creation of two expansive parks and a 1,600 square-meter museum, aiming to establish an integrated cultural destination. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described this development as historic, stating: "Today is an important, historic, and joyful day. We eagerly look forward to seeing this wonderful and essential project come to fruition," in reference to the significant strategic importance of the new facility.
AS Roma's management hopes for construction work to commence next year, coinciding with the club's centenary celebrations, with aspirations to obtain final permits by next summer. In this context, the Italian club aims to include the Pietralata stadium among the venues proposed to host matches for the UEFA European Championship 2032, thereby enhancing the Italian capital's presence in international events.
