Sayyida al-Hurra in Civilization 7: Tetouan Ruler Puts Moroccan History Back in the Spotlight!
The historical figure of Sayyida al-Hurra, the 16th-century ruler of Tetouan and leader of naval jihad in northern Morocco, has once again come to prominence. Her story had largely been missing from many common historical narratives, especially regarding the representation of women in the history of the Mediterranean and the Islamic world. This time, however, her name has emerged through the world of video games.
Sayyida al-Hurra has been included as a playable character within the “Tides of Power Collection” content for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. This came after consultative work involving academic Amal al-Haimar, an assistant professor at the University of Kansas. Al-Haimar's interest in the character began with a passing reference that led her to in-depth research on a woman who ruled a coastal city and whose name was linked to naval power and local politics.
Finn Taylor, Narrative Designer at Firaxis Games, stated that Sayyida al-Hurra was chosen because she is “a captivating figure” who possessed both education and status, and achieved significant accomplishments during a turbulent period in Moroccan history.
Amal al-Haimar clarified that the designation “al-Hurra” is not necessarily a family title, but rather an honorific description associated with sovereignty and political independence. She noted that her research revealed a more complex image than the common title “Pirate Queen.”
While European sources describe her as a pirate, other accounts tend to view her as a ruler who utilized the sea to protect local interests and manage delicate regional balances.
The article revealed an important historical dimension, noting that Sayyida al-Hurra ruled the city of Tetouan until 1542, before being removed from power amidst local conflicts and continuous Iberian pressures on the region's coasts.
Regarding the game's production, the University of Kansas reported that al-Haimar was contracted as a “historical and linguistic” consultant to ensure a more accurate representation of the character, with particular attention to language and cultural context.
According to the university, Civilization VII was released on February 11, with Sayyida al-Hurra later added as one of the game's leader characters in an update released on December 9. She thus joins a roster of historical leaders through whom players guide their empires.
The “Tides of Power Collection” content includes new leaders such as Sayyida al-Hurra and Edward Teach (Blackbeard), in addition to new civilizations and wonders introduced as paid content after the game's launch.
Sayyida al-Hurra’s appearance in the game transcends mere digital representation, becoming an example of popular culture’s ability to shed new light on historical figures and narratives that have often been marginalized in mainstream discourse. This prompts a wide audience to inquire about Moroccan history and the role of women in leadership, maritime affairs, and politics.
